It is always a pleasure to travel to Burnbrae and today was no exception. Many thanks to the West of Scotland players, coaches, referee and volunteers for their sport, sportsmanship and hospitality.

The Conference fixture started at a tremendous pace. Both sides jabbed and countered to try and fathom out potential areas of attack, and some wonderful defensive and attacking skills were on place.

Chieftains finally made a breakthrough on about 10mins when Anderson finished strongly. Further probing and testing then saw Crombie go over for an unconverted try. Donoghue, hitting a bit of a purple patch on the Burnbrae 3G, scored the first of his four tries with Captain Armsworth finishing the 1st term scoring with a converted (McCallum) goal.

The second half burst into life with MacLean demonstrating his trademark strong, bustling running style to gain a try at goal which McCallum duly delivered. Then game a spate of tries as the Chieftains found their ‘groove’ despite tenacious defence from our hosts. Tries by Donoghue, Crombie and Armsworth (the latter two converted by McCallum) effectively closed the game out, but the boys of West were not to be deterred and fought back with their own score, beautifully converted to a goal.

A well-read interception by Donoghue got the Chieftain’s scoreboard ticking over again. Substitute Cullen scored a brace quickly (one converted by McCallum) before Donoghue sealed off the purple patch with his final unconverted try of the afternoon.

A couple of wee niggly injuries collected, but on the whole an enjoyable rugby afternoon at Burnbrae. Well done to Crombie for being nominated as Man of the Match, Donoghue received Attacker of the Match, and ‘import’ from the U14s, Cargill, got Defender of the Match. Thanks to him especially for his efforts in his first game for the U15s.
