The club has announced changes in its rugby management and senior coaching arrangements for the 2019-2020 season.

Sean Scott has been appointed as Chairman of the Rugby Board, which has responsibilities for rugby policies across the club.

Mark Cairns will be the Chieftains Head Coach, assisted by Ally Donaldson and Bruce Mcnaughton, with Matthew Scott contributing to match analysis and Fergus Scott to the S&C programme. Two further specialist coaches are expected to join to the coaching team over the closed season.

Chieftains Chairman Charles Mullins said: ’Currie Chieftains have always built outwards from the management and coaching team, seeking to transition talented youngsters into polished players and to support established players to be the very best that they can be’.

‘This has contributed fundamentally to the ‘Currie way of playing’, which over the years has taken the club from a minor regional side to be amongst the best in the Scottish Premiership.’

‘We are exceptionally fortunate to be able to announce a hugely talented and experienced rugby management and coaching team, who are long-time Currie men and deeply committed to our future’.

‘We will now look to rebuild our player base from the core of our experienced players, youngsters coming through, and recruitment of new players who wish to play the best of Scottish club rugby the ‘Currie way’.

Sean Scott played club rugby with Dunfermline and Currie RFC and represented Scotland U21 and North & Midlands. He coached at mini, midi and youth levels at Currie RFC over a 20-year period. This included taking Currie Colts to a Scottish Youth Cup victory in 2010 and coaching Edinburgh U16s. He was also a Premiership referee for a period of 15 years.

Mark Cairns is a former Currie RFC player and Captain, featuring in the Premiership Championship teams of 2006 and 2010. He is a former Captain of the Scotland Club International team and member of the Scotland International 7s team. A Loughborough University graduate in sports scientist, he is a former teacher who co-founded Coach Logic (the international video analysis and communications platform) with Currie team mate Andy Muir. He has been an Assistant Coach at Currie RFC since 2014 and stepped up to take on the Head Coach position in January 2019.

Ally Donaldson was well-kent as Currie RFC’s fly-half in the 1983 – 2000 era. He also played representative rugby for Edinburgh and Scotland A. He began his coaching career at Currie in 2000 and was Head Coach from 2003-2014. He has also coached Scotland U18 and the Scotland Club International side.

Bruce Mcnaughton played for Currie RFC for some 10 years from 1983. Post-retirement he became the club’s Head Coach from 1994-2002. He has a wide range of Scottish Club rugby experience, coaching Murrayfield Wanderers (2003-2005), Peebles (2005-2010) and Stewart’s Melville (2010-2015), before re-turning to Currie. He has also coached with Edinburgh U19/U21 and Scotland U18/U19.

Matthew Scott was a youth and senior fly-half/centre with Currie RFC before becoming a professional rugby player. He made 62 appearances for Edinburgh Rugby from 2011-2016, and then transferred to play in the English Premiership with 34 appearances for Gloucester. He returned to Edinburgh Rugby in 2018 and is a member of the current Edinburgh squad. Initially capped with Scotland U19 (2009), Scotland U20 (2010) and Scotland A (2012), he has gone on to win 39 full Scotland international caps.

Fergus Scott, like his elder brother, played youth and his early senior rugby at Currie RFC distinguishing himself as an outstanding Hooker. He represented Scotland at the U17, U18 and U20 international levels, as well as playing for the Scottish Club International XV. He was contracted with Glasgow Warriors from 2012 -2016. Subsequently he has returned to Currie where he has achieved conspicuous success both as the Currie Chieftains joint-captain and in building the club’s thriving Youth Development Programme and Youth Academy.
