The match against Ayr RFC represented a tremendous opportunity to see a great demonstration at a high level and both squads did not fail to deliver. A hard fought encounter from the first whistle with no player shirking from the task in hand. Credit credit must be given to all the boys for their display of offensive and defensive rugby.

Ayr definitely had a significant edge in the tight, and the Chieftains were forced to consider open play options for breaking down a fantastic defence. After a cagey start, structure started to appear and Baxter bundled over for the first try, ably converted by McCallum. Strong support running led to Cullen crossing the whitewash followed by a true forwards' effort from Armsworth, again converted by McCallum.

After a nasty collision on the wing, Cavens entered the fray and quickly demonstrated his finishing capability with the extra points coming from McCallum. Half time score was 26-0.

The second half started well for Ayr who were determined to secure some points on the board, and a well worked converted try accounted for that. The Chieftains then responded. Quick hands by the three quarters allowed Cullen to barrel over in the corner, followed by a weaving and strong run from the back three giving Anderson the chance to score. Hardie completed the Chieftains scoring with a characteristically powerful run. McCallum converted. Ayr brought the match scoring to an end with a wonderful angled run resulting in a converted try.
