That Wild Colonial Boy

At a training session three and a bit seasons ago, Senior Squad Manager, John Muir pointed to a new young recruit who was buzzing around the park like an automaton; the scene appeared very similar to those TV adverts for long-life batteries. ‘That’s my colonial relation’ he said with some pride. Thomas Gordon not only has strong Scottish connections, but he is a match for any wild Highlander. Tom soon stamped his mark in the senior Currie team, not only in his preferred position as an open-side flank forward, but also, when required, on the wing. In whatever position, he always proved a handful for opposing teams, and he has scored several memorable tries. The Edinburgh Academy propelled his progress into age-grade representative rugby where he achieved International Caps at Under 18 and Under 20 level. In recognition of his achievements he was invited to train with Glasgow Warriors last season. His enthusiasm, skill, speed and all-round development with the Chieftains and the Scottish Rugby Academy, have now been rewarded with a Pro-14 contract. Tom follows close on the heels of Luke Crosbie and Charlie Shiel. The wild colonial boy is certainly worth his salt. Congratulations Thomas and may your ‘long-life’ batteries power you to even greater rugby achievements.

The Malleny Fliers

Another ‘Son of Malleny’ with a truly local connection is Harvey Elms. The Elms family have been associated with Currie RFC for a long time, and Harvey is the next generation to make an impression at Malleny Park and beyond. His speed and flair in the back line is ideally suited to the abridged version of the game where he has excelled. Last season Harvey played in several of the World Sevens series tournaments, and he has now been selected to represent Scotland in the Sevens World Cup in California later this month. Well done Harvey, it is good to see another Currie back following in the footsteps of Matthew Scott, Dougie Fife and Jimmy Johnston.
