We have today learned that Dean Maxwell, a past player from New Zealand, has tragically died in a car accident.

Dean was originally from Hawkes Bay, but it was in Melbourne that he met Gary and Ally Donaldson, Paul Calder, Bruce Macnaughton, Mark Montgomery, while playing for Melbourne Kiwis.

A short time later, in 1987, he moved to Edinburgh where he worked and played a few seasons, with Currie Chieftains. A hard, uncompromising back row forward, who once played 40 minutes with a broken collar bone, Dean made many friends and gained much respect when playing for the club.

Dean subsequently returned to Melbourne where he played and helped out at the now amalgamated Kiwi Hawthorn club. Recently he met up with some ex-Currie players Mark Te Whaiti, Murray Laugerson and Nial Thomson plus Campbell Wilson and current Currie Chieftain Cairn Ramsay (Dean is on the far left of the header photograph and also shown in his playing days). He is remembered with great fondness and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.
